The Skills Session is simply a day for the kids to get excited about the season and a passive means for we as coaches to do basic evaluations to help us break up the teams the best we can with the experience/inexperience of the kids.  Ultimately, this is far from an exact science. However, over the years it has proven a successful means to help with the team selection.

The kids will do 3 drills..

#1 Dribbling

Simply dribble down the court with their strong hand and return with their weak hand. (Many kids will not be able to dribble with their weak hand and this is fine.)  We'll have at least two kids dribbling at once to alleviate some of the nervousness the kids may have.

#2 Passing and Taking a Lay-Up

In the same Drill we'll have each player make a pass  to a coach and receive a pass for a "give and go" and then take a lay-up on their strong side.

#3 Dribble and "Jump" shot

Each player will take the ball from mid-court to the basket and stop a few feet from the hoop for a shot.

We'll also take the height of each player upon arrival.

As coaches we'll be as discreetly as we can rating the kids in these categories. (3 coaches will rate each drill as most of the coaches will be involved helping to organize the kids and the drills)

Again, the intention of the day is to be low-key and and get the kids to look forward to the season. The time is designated to be 90 minutes but realistically it takes closer to 50-60 for each group. Our goal is to keep it moving and appreciate your daughter arriving promptly for her time. If she cannot make her specified time due a conflict please attend the "other" sat time or the Sun make-up time. (To help us keep the #'s relatively balanced between the two times pls don't attend a different time for your grade based on convenience but only if you have a conflict)

During the Skills Sessions announcements will also be made by the Coordinator on the league as we kick-off the season.
